Remember to Remember

Do you remember your phone number? Do you remember your mother’s phone number? Do you remember your cousin’s phone number?

Today, memory is a forgotten cognitive tool. Google eliminated the need to remember anything; now information and answers are one click away. Memorizing directions to a friend’s house was too much work. Now the GPS directs us at every turn.

Go out and ask the kids if memorizing things is important. Why should they need multiplication tables? They have calculators on their phone. Why should they need a dictionary? They have spell check installed. Why should they learn to write at all? Their g-mail auto-generates responses.

Memorization makes us human. When you memorize something, it becomes part of you through hard word and repetition. We must remember who we really are. We must remember to remember.
